Although most religions revere the principles of harmony and order in the Universe, Discordianism can be interpreted as a recognition that disharmony and chaos are equally valid aspects of reality. The matron deity of Discordianism is Eris, the ancient Greek goddess of discord, whom the Romans identified their goddess Discordia
 Aneristic Principle: With our concept making apparatus called mind we look at reality through the ideas-about-reality which our cultures give us. The ideas-about-reality are mistakenly labeled reality and unenlightened people are forever perplexed by the fact that other cultures see reality differently. It is only the ideas-about-reality which differ. We look at the world through windows on which have been drawn grids (concepts). Different philosophies use different grids. A culture is a group of people with rather similar grids. Through a window we view chaos, and relate it to the points on our grid, and thereby understand it. The Order is in the Grid.
Western philosophy is traditionally concerned with contrasting one grid with another grid, and amending grids in hopes of finding a perfect one that will account for all reality and will, hence, (say unenlightened westerners) be True. This is illusory. Some grids can be more useful than others, some more beautiful than others, some more pleasant than others, etc., but none can be more True than any other. The belief that order is true and disorder is false or somehow wrong is the Aneristic Illusion. The reverse is the Eristic Illusion
Disorder is unrelated information viewed through some particular grid. But, like relation, no-relation is a concept. Male, like female, is an idea about sex. To say that male-ness is absence of female-ness, or vice versa, is a matter of definition and metaphysically arbitrary. The point is that (little-t) truth is a matter of definition relative to the grid one is using at the moment, and that (capital-T) Truth, metaphysical reality, is irrelevant to grids entirely. Pick a grid, and through it some chaos appears ordered and some appears disordered. (Err-i-oo, AYR-a, AY-rah, AYR-ee, mel-AYR-ee, tel-AYR-ee, AYR-yol, AYR-lees) Earth goddess of fertility, fate, sovereignty and mother of Bres: Moon with the Fomorian God Elatha: Raven Knowledge. She has a magical feathered cloak that will turn one into a hawk. Her children are a race of winged manlike natures, which avoid contact with other races. They live on two islands and are birds the size of eagles and cranes. They are red with green heads. After the Danaans revolted against Bres, Eri took him to the Fomorii court to seek aid to regain his throne.
 She can shift into crone, bird, or virgin hermit who was cut down with a scythe by female haymakers. A miraculous stream sprang up where she fell. In the Book of Invasions she is married to Mac Gréine: Son of Sun. Her sisters are Banba: Land Unplowed for a Year, who is associated with magic pigs, and Fódla: Earth. She is the daughter of the god Bíle: Sacred Tree (others say Dagda: Good God, still others say Bile is her brother and Diguellious [father] Mynogen [ mother]). Others say she is Fomorian or of the Tuátha de Danaan. The Cronicum Scotium says she is Cessair: Pollen.
  Her river is in Ceredigion. Children lay posies of flowers every 8th July at Chittlehampton Church in Devon after a procession to bless her holy well. She is seen with her cow. She is patroness of the royal seat of Uisnech Yr Wyddfa: The Chained Eagles of Snowdon Greek, eirênê: peace
 In Greece, Hesiod’s Works and Days 11–24, distinguishes two different goddesses named Eris: ‘For one fosters evil war and battle, being cruel: her no man loves; but perforce, through the will of the deathless gods, men pay harsh Strife her honour due. But the other is the elder daughter of dark Night: Nyx, and the son of Cronus who sits above and dwells in the aether, set her in the roots of the earth: and she is far kinder to men’. Some have interpreted this passage as the creative forces of order and disorder.
 The Grecian Eris is most famous in Homer’s Iliad She is not invited to the forced wedding of Peleus and Thetis, the parents of Achilles and she tosses the Apple of Discord, a golden apple inscribed Kallisti – ‘For the most beautiful one’, or ‘To the Prettiest One’ – into the fray provoking the Olympian goddesses Hera, Pallas: Wisdom Athena, and Aphrodite to fight over who is entitled to the apple. They attempt to bribe (P)aris, Prince of Troy, to choose one of them as the apple owner. Hera offers political power; Pallas Athene promises skill in battle; and Aphrodite tempts him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen: Sun, wife of Menelaus of Sparta.
